How we work with wool

We first started producing wool garments in 2011. We wanted a natural product that could fit into our vision of circularity, without losing performance.

We first started producing wool garments in 2011. Then, creating a wool-fabric that lived up to our picky standards was not easy. Foremost, we wanted a natural product that could fit into our vision of circularity, without losing performance.

Being biodegradable, wool is circular by nature. Unfortunately, wonderful properties like these disappears if the wool is blended with synthetic fibers; something that is common both in the outdoor industry and in fast fashion. Synthetics is usually added to enhance durability, elasticity or to reach a lower price point for the consumer. When we set out to create Airborn, our trademark second-skin wool fabric, not blending a wool fabric that fine with synthetics was an anomaly. We instead wanted to use other natural materials to create the same performance. Looking to nature, we found our answer in silk - a fiber that is strong, light and comfortable. After years of field testing we finally got the results we were looking for, and the Airborn-formula has not changed since. Moving forward, we’ve found other natural materials that go particularly well with wool, such as lyocell-based Tencel – made from wood pulp.

Wool garments have natural unique performance properties, it will keep you warm when cold, cool when warm and in the meantime eliminate bad odor. All it takes is a flock of sheep, and some very strict animal welfare codes of conduct of course. There are many different qualities of wool, depending on the origin and how it’s produced. Some thick wool can feel itchy and heavy, for that reason, Houdini only uses mulesing-free merino wool.

Going forward, we are continuously looking into fabric- and garment production to enhance biodegradability even further. In 2016, we launched our first wool products with full traceability, which we are very proud of and will continue to develop so our customers can know exactly where the sheep live that keep you warm and dry throughout your adventures.
