This nature loving explorer turned his dream job into reality when he started his successful hiking blog.

Growing up in Germany, Hendrik has always spent a lot of time outside, something that has characterized his entire life. For the past sixteen years he has been living in Finland where he started working as an environment management consultant. In 2009 he launched his blog (http://hikinginfinland.com) Hiking In Finland, which started out as a way of documenting his hiking adventures but turned into a full time job.

Hendrik says that it was simply more fun having a job that allowed him to be outside all the time. He found a way to do what he loves — exploring the outdoors — for a living.

Today, Hendrik’s blog is the biggest English outdoor blog in Finland. But it is no longer limited to only hiking or only in Finland, he now reports from his adventures all over Scandinavia. He paddles around Finnish rivers, goes ice climbing in Abisko National Park and ski tours in Northern Norway.

We admire the way Hendrik makes use of the incredible nature we have here in Scandinavia. It shows that we do not have to travel far to experience beautiful surroundings or thrilling adventures, but that we can find them in our very own backyard.

Frågor & Svar

– What does ”protecting the environment” mean to you and how do you integrate that in your every day and working life?
”As soon as I started my company, I joined 1% For The Planet, an organisation that encourages businesses to donate one percent of their annual net worth to support environmental issues. I also do not have a driver’s license or a car, so I go everywhere by bike or foot. I try to eat mostly vegetarian food and I live a very minimalistic lifestyle. For every flight ticket I buy, I donate money to plant trees. ”
– How does spending time in nature affect you as a person?
”It affects me in a lot of ways, but it mainly just makes me a more relaxed and better person. If I spend too much time in a city or indoors, I can get quite grumpy. So I think it’s better not just for me but for the people around me to let me out of the house on a regular basis. ”
– What is the best part about your adventures?
”I have realized that it is less about the places and more about the people you go there to share the experience with. ”
– Do you have a ”magic moment” you would like to share?
”The first thing that comes to mind is when I went to Meteora in Greece to go rock climbing. To get to the climbing spot, we were driving down from the mountains and this huge valley opened up with an impressive rock formation in the middle. It was probably the most beautiful place I have ever climbed at. ”
