Elin Turpeinen

The multitasking snowboarder who has a huge heart for the environment.

When Elin started snowboarding at the age of ten, she instantly fell in love with the sport. Back then she mostly rode on her local hill but nowadays, she preferably spends most of her winters exploring the Alps.

A few years ago, her friends took her out freeriding and she started competing in the Freeride World Qualifiers and the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championship, which she won in 2016. She also started to spend a lot of time splitboarding, which now is Elin’s favorite way to discover and experience a mountain.

“You gain a bigger appreciation for your surroundings when you go up the mountain on a splitboard or a pair of touring skis. You have time to stop and really take in the view of the mountains, compared to when you’re on a lift that takes you up in an instant”.

Elin is an ambassador for and an active member of Protect Our Winters, POW, the leading climate advocacy group for the winter sports community. She spreads the message of the organization by writing articles and creating collaborations with skiing magazines like Åka Skidor etc.

In between winters she works as a full time journalist as well as does some freelance writing and photography work. We at Houdini are impressed over her dedication to protect what she loves.

Frågor & Svar

– How do you think your friends would describe you?
”Positive and energetic. Driven and with a lot of ambition. That I like to have a lot on my plate. ”
– Tell us something unexpected about yourself.
”I actually have an education in functional textile. A lot of people do not expect that about me. But it comes in handy in my everyday life since I know what fabrics are good for what activities and so on. That’s why I love Houdini. ”
– Do you have a ”magic moment” you would like to share?
”One of my most magical experiences was the first time I was riding on Bec de Rosses in Verbier. Standing on the top of the mountain that is known from Freeride World Tour to be the most challenging and extreme in the tour and looking at where I was about to drop in was an amazing and thrilling feeling. Also, I was the last one my group to drop in that day, so I was standing alone up there for a while and just taking it all in. It was incredible to say the least. ”
– What do you think could make the world a better place?
”If more people discovered night trains as a way of transportation to ski resorts. Traveling by night train means that you do not really spend any time actually traveling since you are just sleeping and you get to wake up in the morning and hit the slopes first thing. Besides, if more people traveled by train instead of flying or driving, our emissions would decrease significantly. Win-win for everybody! ”
